絵を描くときは、頭に浮かんだ描きたいものから染めていきます。
そうするとそこから次々と浮かんできて、それをひたすら衝動のままに染めていく。そのなかで言葉も浮かんできたり、もしくは完成した何日もあとに現れたり。
言葉はその作品が、この世に生まれてきてよかったなと思ってもらいたいので、いつの間にか自分のなかで作るようになっていました。
絵の完成をみるときは、「こうなったんだ〜」と他人事のように思います。
なぜ自分はこんな絵を描くのだろうと考えたときに、行き着いた言葉が「つながり」です。自分の記憶や思考を探っていくと、世界のすべてのものが同じで、つながっていて、とてもシンプルで美しいのだなと思っていたから。
今回の作品《楽園》は2014年から作り続けている作品です。
たくさんの報われない命が少しでも心地いいと思える場所を作りたかったのです。美しいものはとても強く、儚く、まっすぐでめまいがするほどです。

Whenever I execute my dye-works, I always begin with what’s on my mind.
As images begin to surface one after another, I keep dyeing while trusting my impulses. Words come forth readily during this process, or perhaps many days after the completion of my works. With words, I want to celebrate the birth of my artworks so that they will find happiness on earth. That is why I became accustomed to composing the words within myself subconsciously.
When I look at my completed art, I realize “OK, this is how it came out,” as if I were observing it from a distance.
When I asked myself why my works turn out as they do, the word I came across was “connection.” When I traced my recollections and thoughts, I figured out that everything in the world was the same-- connected, very simple and beautiful.
I had worked on “Paradise” since 2014, which is exhibited here.
There are a lot of creatures that go unrewarded, and I want to give them cozy places. Whatever the beautiful things may be, they are also strong, ephemeral and straight. Whenever I look at them, their intense energy makes me dizzy.

染めと紡ぐ物語

藤沢まゆは、筒描きという日本の染色における伝統工芸を用いて、淡い色調で布に絵を染め上げ、作品を制作。植物や動物、自然を入り交えた絵と世界観のある物語を作り作品を発表している。
伊那市高遠町に生まれ、自然に囲まれた環境のなかで育ち、幼い頃、母親の絵本の読み聞かせに、いつしか自分の空想の世界を思い描いていた。
「本当は、世界中のすべてのものは同じ」――すべてのものの根っこは共通だという認識を持ち、複雑に絡まったようにみえるものも、本当に大切なものはとてもシンプルなもの、という。人間の日々の生活から宇宙にいたるあらゆることが、人間は自然の一部だという一体感とともに、今この場所で感じ、考えることでみえてくる。
そんな思いを抱きながら、染色を通して「藤沢まゆの世界」を表現する。
今回出品する《楽園》には、次のような詩を添える。

ここではないどこか遠くにある場所
今は見えないけれど、いつか会える場所
たくさんの悲しみや憎しみを大きく包み込む場所
いま、目の前にある
つらく悲しい命がむくわれるように

わたしたちの過ちをお許しください
わたしは小さい者だから
とても小さい力しかないけれど
ここから祈ります
あなたが幸せに、笑顔になりますように

Weaving Stories with Dyeing

Fujisawa Mayu executes her works by dyeing fabric in soft colors, using the Japanese traditional technique of dyeing called “Tsutsugaki.”
Using mixed motifs of plants, animals and other familiar objects in nature that reflect her worldview, she creates narrative pictures and continues to present her works at various exhibitions.
She says, “Everything on earth is basically the same,” projecting a perception that everything stems from the same root - even things which look tangled and complicated turn out to be very simple and plain in actuality. Furthermore, she also holds that living a normal life is not just an ordinary thing, but both miraculous and extraordinary. In her works, she renders the “World of Fujisawa Mayu” through dyeing with an earnest wish for the prevalence of peace.
