I have been interested in what the ultimate materials are, to be accurate, materials that can be used for constructing buildings. What are the ultimate building materials including not only materials of modern times such as steel, concrete and glass, but also those of previous times such as stone, earth and grass?
Tossing my thoughts around, while continuing to use each of the materials practically, I finally came upon two answers: “earth” and “charcoal”.
The elements composing the natural world, including even artificial materials, are categorized into two groups: inorganic material without carbon, and organic material containing carbon. The former is crumbled, crushed and finally returned to the earth. The latter, when kindled, burns and finally becomes charcoal over time. Even if you look around the world, you won’t find any building materials made of charcoal, except for “Yakisugi,” which is charred wood made of Japanese cedar.
I would like to make Yakisugi by myself, then, build a kind of simple site, or a space utilizing the Yakisugi I made, where I can show videos and exhibit panels on the walls.

What was the driving force behind FUJIMORI Terunobu becoming an architect?

The Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum was designed by FUJIMORI Terunobu, with his idea of the things that “only exist as they are,” in mind, considering the environment of the place where he was born and grew up, along with his deep understanding of the history of the religious faith of the Jinchokan Moriyas family, the head of whom had been the leading Shinto priest of the Suwa Great Shrine “Upper” for generations. FUJIMORI’s design and concept behind the museum were created by way of “ripening” a variety of “What Fujimori observed,” following in his footsteps. Moreover, it can be said that the basics of his inner self originated not only from the worship of nature nurtured in the village where he was born and grew up, but also from his feelings and experiences cultivated in his everyday life there. Consequently, FUJIMORI’s encounter with the opportunity to design the Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum enabled him to exhibit the inner self of FUJIMORI Terunobu, which, as a result, brought FUJIMORI Terunobu to be an architect.
