Introduction of Post-war Contemporary Art in Nagano Prefecture toward the Future

Art Museum & Library, Ota

Yagasaki, Yuka

This year marks the fourth SHINBISM Exhibition, which started as one of the various activities of the Nagano Prefectural Artistic Supervisory Team’s projects in 2017. In order to materialize this event, Team Shinbism was organized, where curators having different backgrounds learn and help each other through organizing exhibitions for the sake of introducing art produced in the area. Team Shinbism, in other words, the Shinbism Network, was planned with the expectation of contributing to the development and deepening of art in whole of Nagano Prefecture in the future, and was proposed by Mr. Kunio Motoe, the late Art Director of Nagano Prefecture and an organizer of the SHINBISM Network as well.

By the way, contemporary art in Nagano Prefecture has been introduced since the mid-1980s mainly at exhibitions held by private museums or outdoor exhibitions, but public museums were not active enough in doing so in the earlier days. In response to this, SHINBISM 4 “focuses on artists who play an important role in tracing the history of post-war contemporary art in Nagano Prefecture.”

The artists involved in this exhibition number eleven: KITAZAWA Kazunori, KOBAYASHI Kisei, KOMATSU Yoshikazu, KOYAMA Rieko, TATSUNO Toeko, TOYA Shigeo, NEGISHI Yoshiro, FUJIMORI Terunobu, MATSUZAWA Yutaka, MARUTA Kyoko and MOTAI Toshiya. TATSUNO, KOMATSU, KOYAMA, KITAZAWA and TOYA are artists who developed their productions individually, responding to the tendency in art from the end of the 1960s to the mid-1970s, when artists were cautious not to produce their works by hand. Some of them stuck to printmaking or installation, others, on the contrary, resolved the problem by way of producing their works actively using their hands. On the other hand, NEGISHI, MARUTA and MOTAI found their points of view and formed their styles while studying abroad, and still continue to paint. KOBAYASHI and MATSUZAWA are younger and older than the other nine artists by more than a generation, respectively. KOBAYASHI, a photographer, focuses his eye on the sites found in festivals. His style has something in common to KITAZAWA’s installations. MATSUZAWA, a pioneer of conceptual art in Japan, is a very important contemporary artist in Nagano Prefecture. Finally, FUJIMORI, whose major theme is the history of modern and contemporary architecture, began constructing buildings by himself since 1991, which embody a kind of connection between the past and present, much like the festivals shot by KOBAYASHI.

This exhibition is considered and planned by all of the curators so that each of the contemporary art works produced by the artists connected to Nagano Prefecture are exposed to viewers in the text of what it is meant to be, not putting the artists and their works in the stereotypical context of Shinshu. In the exhibition, first of all, it is desirable that you look at each of the works carefully and deepen your understanding about them. Moreover, it would be our pleasure if you, being moved by this exhibition, think about the relationship among the climate and its influence on the artists and their works, though it may be very hard to grasp. We sincerely appreciate your support for us to deepen our research on contemporary art in Nagano Prefecture and introduce its results to you.
