(Text omitted) When you follow a well-prepared plan and execute it, no, you “attempt” to do so, it makes you nervous to feel that the reality veers off your initial plan little by little. In this case, you should resign yourself to reality itself.
The reason why the paintings which I previously made looked faded was due to the fact that I scribbled toward rendering the image of, “the painting I was thinking of would be like this.” In other words, it resulted from averting my eyes from the reality of my painting in which everything looked differently with every brush stroke. By switching my way of thinking to something like, “Yes, indeed, I’m traveling right now,” I discovered that I came upon a new horizon of creating my work. (Omission)
My painting changed a lot. Concentrating on reality, I became aware that oil colors weren’t suitable material for my work, where, a simplistic idea, such as, “only to draw a line on paper by pencil is enough,” is allowed. Just like traveling, my production should be part of reality as if following Mother Nature. However, I may indeed encounter a number of crossroads from now on. To continuously expose to reality my frame of consciousness, which becomes rusty and blurred in everyday life, is what my life and creating art are.

Essay on KOMATSU Yoshikazu

KOMATSU Yoshikazu won the Ohashi Prize, a Scholarship, which is awarded only to the most excellent students of the Tokyo University of the Arts. The 1970s was the golden age of the “Mono-ha,” or “School of Things.” In those days, the Artists’ Joint Struggle League (Bi-kyoto) denied artistic expression, but the artists that belonged to it gradually lost their production concepts. Most artists in the 1970s tended to be strongly influenced by this movement. KOMATSU also switched from painting to installation and denied painting itself as well. After returning to his hometown, while teaching art at high school, he started painting once again. In this exhibition, his works after his “return to painting” are on display.
Because of his early death, his pursuit of painting came to a halt.
Nevertheless, his calm but concealed savage spirit in his paintings are fascinating.
