NAGATO Hiroyuki

One time, I came up with an idea that if I engrave a picture on a wall used to resemble a wood block, and print it on paper, it will make a huge woodcut printing. It was exciting! Immediately, I put the idea into practice. Ten mm-thick plywood panel was used for the material of the wall. A chainsaw was used as the tool for engraving. The motif I engraved on the wall was a life-size giant beech tree. It was really exhilarating work! The mammoth beech tree is 300 years old and stands at a place higher than the water source of the village, near the signpost showing an elevation of 1200 meters, spreading out its branches and leaves towards the sky. At some point, it was wrapped by a Shimenawa, a sacred straw festoon, around its stem. Beech tree nurture nature and clean the water. The greatness of nature is an indispensable site for my creation. Drawing is a continual action to create a new future taking on the phenomenon in front of you, while you are deliberately involved in the result brought upon by your actions themselves. It is not an action towards a predetermined point. As a result, it may lead you to unexpected directions and landing points which you never thought possible. However, I think that is solely dynamism of creation and necessary power to establish the work.

What NAGATO‘s paintings that give off such mysterious aura imply, are death and life, awe and a longing to nature, loss and regeneration, combined.
His motifs, grasped with his keen perception, merge into deep colors together with flexible touches, accents and various materials. In this way, he creates a new world, where light rhythm and a deep sense of relief resonate with each other in a profound atmosphere.
After graduating from the Oil-painting Department of Tokyo University of Arts, NAGATO continues to fulfill two responsibilities as a teacher of arts and a painter. On one hand, he guides his students by showing himself working as a creator, on the other hand, he continues expressing, energetically, his own world of art. His powerful and dynamic way of painting, with its meticulously constructed surface, attract viewers’ attention along with its various artistic expression and abundance of presence.
