SHINICHI Maruyama

I would like to discover and express phenomena that cannot be seen with the naked eye by utilizing technology. I was born and raised in Nagano and enjoyed shooting my favorite subjects with my cameras. I worked at various projects in Tokyo and abroad, and am now looking for subjects I wish to shoot. I cannot continue working at the same project because I have a restless personality that dissuades me from doing the same thing, so I still feel like shooting subjects I like or have never seen. I sometimes think I’m returning to my origin. I really appreciate having been given the opportunity to exhibit my works here at home this time.

MARUYAMA Shinich pursues “beauty invisible to the naked eye.” The subject of most of his works is real liquid with mass. He contains liquid dancing in the air into an analog medium as fine pieces of photographs, such as “Kusho,” “Light Sculpture” and “Water Sculpture.” MARUYAMA captures and expresses beauty as being “artificial and natural” because even if he shoots the subjects according to his methodology built on his repeated experiments, a natural power still influences his works. Because of that, we view the interesting sequence of his choices against his intervening intention and act of shooting. His works will give you a unique opportunity to reconsider the materiality of contemporary artistic photography.
