Hayashi incorporates his Japanese sensibilities for the love of the simple, vapid, and ephemeral, with the Western rigor for conceptual and psychological analysis. His recent work has incorporated ideas of a “place” and takes into consideration of how artworks work in relationship to certain site. This consideration often expands beyond the limits of a room in a gallery or a museum, and encompasses more global perspective of the locale. The artwork not only becomes a microscopic study of the object, but serves as a starting point to a macroscopic investigation of the surrounding location (city, town, country). The work is often created on site after extensive study of the topography, landscape, and its people. He incorporates mixed media ranging from video, woods, ceramics, fiber, paper, and metals. Hayashi is particularly drawn to materials that are mundane and fragile as a metaphor for the human condition. The void within the piece is the potentiality of life. Ultimately, the work is deeply process based and often relies upon collaboration of the site, as well as those who inhabit the area for a solution.

Art is Experience

It has been more than ten years ago that Yoshimi HAYASHI has been organizing exhibitions and creating his works, while staying in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. In this exhibition his new works will be introduced which exhibit the combined efforts of his usual local process in Nagano Prefecture and the experience of collaborating with local high school students. Born in Japan, Yoshimi HAYASHI moved to California with his family when he was six years old. He studied psychology and art history in the U.S., experienced Japanese ceramic art, tea ceremony, participated in the Shikoku Pilgrimage and studied Karate in Japan. While in the U.S., he enjoyed surfing and cycling as well. He came to understand nature based on his experiences in both countries and, from that standpoint, genuinely set off to create art. His works suggests to us the importance of experience and that art must be created freely in the same sense as we strive to live.
