YOKOYAMA Masanobu

Seeing is fighting. Seeing is being trapped in the format of an institutionalized ready-made product. Seeing motifs, simply seeing, could offer cues to destroy and go beyond the visual system. The power of the system is so tremendous as to frustrate us, however, as a result, it may enable us to find traces of our predecessors’ battles, here and there, like a mirage. The battle against format is not limited to fine arts. Though it is effective and smooth to live a life with ready-made products, it simply lacks vitality. You can see the “vanitas” movement, not only in still-life paintings, but also everywhere on a daily basis, where life, distancing itself from format, and death, pulling the format back, flip over and invert the opponent with each other, using their forces, from which you can take your cue for creating works.

YOKOYAMA Masanobu not only does research on the theme of still life, but also produces his works on the same theme. Based on the historical fact that still life transformed from “copying nature,” to “executing visual experiments,” he attempts to verify how the way of seeing was institutionalized from various points of view, such as the physiological or brain-scientifical visual systems, mental vision, and so on. Moreover, he himself practices producing “still-life” works as examples of reconstructing “perception.” The “Still Life Series,” exhibited here, are works created from the same motif, based on photos shot partially under different lighting, points of view, and focuses, and then, compiled into the shape of a grid as a whole. His works, by disassembling our visual system, ask viewers what it means to “see.” This time, his stay for the sake of production as an artist in residence, in the institution of Koumi-machi, will assist him in proceeding to a new practice.
