私が子どもの頃、ガジェットやおもちゃの多くは、任天堂、セガ、カシオ、ソニーなどの日本の企業の製品でした。これらは私に日本が未来的で先進的な地であるという先入観を与えました。
大学で写真を学び、ロンドンで写真のレタッチをして働いたあと、私が想像していた、まるでSF小説にあるような大都市を確かめるために日本に移転しました。
しかし、日本の日常生活の現実は、ほかの先進国に比べても未来的ではないように感じました。そこで≪Land of Technology≫プロジェクトで、私が幼少の頃抱いていた「デジタル未来世界」ともいうべき幻影を作り出そうとしたのです。
これとは対照的に、最近の私のプロジェクトである≪A Class room with a View≫は、ずっと昔の「家」に帰ったような場所である、長野の山々に囲まれた田舎の小学校に焦点を当てています。
Lots of the electronic gadgets and toys from my childhood were products from Japanese companies like Nintendo, Sega, Casio, Sony, etc. This technology instilled in me a preconception of Japan as being a very futuristic place.
After studying photography at university and working as a retoucher in London, I relocated to Japan to discover if it was the science fiction metropolis I had imagined.
However, the reality of daily life here seems no more futuristic than it is in any other modern, developed country. But in my Land of Technology project, I tried to create the illusion that it is some kind of digital future world that lives up to my childhood expectation.
In contrast, my latest project, A Classroom with a View, focuses on the daily goings on of a rural elementary school located in the mountains of Nagano – the place I have called home for the past decade.
