Whenever I encounter something that has been around for centuries, I am struck by its grandeur. Perhaps this is due to the fact I was born and raised in the city of Nagano and have been deeply attached to Zenkoji Temple ever since I was a child. Things which underwent secular changes have their own depth and beauty that cannot be imitated by something new.
I studied graphic design, and it has introduced me to various kinds of art. One notable aspect which greatly influenced me is the paintings created by artists during the Muromachi and Edo Periods. I remember vividly how fascinated I was by viewing the spatial compositions and splendid worlds of flowers and birds by these painters.
Ever since the Meiji Period, Japan has extensively adopted Western values and, as a result, it has discarded its originality. By mingling the characteristics of Japanese art which was seen until the Edo Period, and the graphic design used in modern visual art, I endeavor to create a new world of modern Japanese art.
何百年ものときを経たものに偉大さを感じています。長野市で生まれ育ち、幼い頃から身近にあった善光寺の影響があるのだと思います。長い年月の積み重ねによって生まれる変化は「新しさ」には真似できない重みと美しさを感じます。
私はグラフィックデザインを学びました。そしてそれを入口にしてさまざまなアートに出会い、そのなかでもとくに室町から江戸時代にかけての絵師たちの影響を受けました。彼らの空間構成や花鳥の華美な世界に酔ったのを今でもはっきり覚えています。
明治以降、日本は西洋の価値観を大きく取り入れてきましたが、それは同時に日本のオリジナリティを捨て去る行為にもなりました。江戸時代以前にみられた日本美術の特徴と現代的ビジュアルであるグラフィックのスタイルを融合させ、新たな和の世界を作りたいと思っています。
